2 Sharing Thoughts on the Threshold of Shavuot My dear friends, we are on the threshold of the Festival of Shavuot, one of the three great pilgrimage festivals when our People of old endeavored to ascend to Jerusalem and deliver their donations on the Temple Mount. The first of the festivals was Pesach, designated as ZMAN CHERUTENU the time of our freedom and liberation from slavery and oppression, Without freedom there is no national existence. The second festival was Shavuot, known in our Tradition as ZMAN MATAN TORATENU the time of receiving the Torah. For a nation to exist and survive, freedom is not sufficient. It must have a set of well-defined laws and regulations, a lawful framework for its existence. Without a framework, the people is turned into a chaotic, anarchic mass. For us, the Jewish People, the Torah offers the basis of orderly existence and is the prerequisite of national survival. The Tora conceivably could be interpreted. Its origin stretching back 3,500 years it could be subject to readjustments in accordance with changing times. We could easily consider suspending the animal sacrifices described in the Torah, or the means of punishment depicted, that were already reinterpreted by the Sages in the course of the ages (for example: eye for eye means adequate financial compensation; and similar). But we dare not abandon the Torah as the fundamental foundation stone of our national edifice. Shabbat, kashrut and more, must be observed, even if in certain altered well-defined forms, if we wish to be designated as a People. All the more so must this principle be applied to our sublime moral laws our greatest gift to civilized mankind. Note that we consider Shavuot as the time when the Jewish People received the law at Mount Sinai. In fact, our Tradition and our prayers do NOT refer to Shavuot in such a manner. The words applied are ZMAN MATAN TORATENU the time of GIVING of the Torah (from the word NOTEN). The Torah was GIVEN to us, handed to us on a golden platter through the inspiration of the sublime Power of the universe. The RECEIVING of the Torah has been left to our fathers throughout the ages, to us, to you and me. Is it really a time of receiving for us? Does Prayer have any meaning to us except when we apply it for our own selfish purposes? Does our community, our people, have any real meaning to us? Do we give it one day a week? Are we ready to give it four hours, nay two hours of that one day to give our people a ghost of a chance for consolidation, for overcoming obstacles, and ultimately for survival? The TIME OF RECEIVING is here. Friends, how about making a commitment, here and now, of taking greater interest in Synagogue activities Shabbat. Festivals, learning, functions, socials, mutual help? Remember: the greatest gift to us is when we help others. Try it. You may be enormously surprised. As the saying goes: You may like it. Just to round out this message, the third of the Pilgrimage Festivals is Sukkot, which is designated as ZMAN SIMCHATENU the Time of Joy. Once we gain our freedom, and we live within the framework that sustains and perpetuates it, we will be elevated to the pinnacle of joy the most we can expect of a life of fulfillment. 3 משולחנו של הנשיא: חג השבועות זכה לשלושה שמות נוספים: חג מתן תורה,חג הביכורים וחג הקציר. חג מתן תורה זה הזמן המתאים ביותר להודות מעומק הלב לברוך ועידית מאור, וגם למרדכי קובלסקי, בעל-הקורא של בית ישראל, עודות ספר התורה המחודש, אחד משלושה ספרים כשרים בארון הקודש שלנו. מרדכי תרך לבדוק את כל הקלף ולאחר מכן ברוך ועידית תרמו את הכסף, לקחו את התורה לתיקון והחזירו אותו בחזרה. תודתנו מקרב לב לכולכם! תודה לכל חברי הוועד על העבודה הנפלאה אשר אתם עושים. ברצוני לברך את כל החברים החדשים אשר הצטרפו לוועד בית הכנסת. כדי שנוכל להמשיך לתפעל את בית ישראל אנו זקוקים לחברים חדשים וזה צריך להיות בסדר עדיפות עליונה. אם לא יבואו חברים חדשים לא יהיה לנו זכות קיום. תודה לכל החברים שבזכותם התפילות מתנהלים כל יום כולל שבתות וחגים. תודה לחברי ב.י.ק.ה. ותודה לכל הנשים הנפלאות אשר דואגות לקידושים. תודה לכל החברים שבאים למניינים כל בוקר. From the desk of the President: אני ואשתי מאחלים לכם חג שבועות שמח,בריאות,אושר ועושר. אהרון קריזר Dear friends, Shavuot is blessed with three other names: The Feast of the Giving of the Torah, The Feast of the First Fruits and the Harvest Festival. What better time than this to thank Baruch and Edith Maor, and Mordechai Kowalsky, our torah-reader, for the renewed Sefer Torah which makes three kosher Sifrei Torah in our Aron Kodesh. Mordechai checked over the entire scroll, noting where the need for corrections were, and Baruch and Edith donated the funds for the entire project, took the Torah to the scribe and, when the work was finished, returned the Torah to Bet Israel. We owe them all a deep debt of gratitude. Allow me to welcome the new Va ad members, who were voted in at the Annual General Meeting last month, and to look forward to working with them as fruitfully as with the previous Va ad. Our main task together with you, our faithful members is to increase the membership. We must reach out to the non-orthodox, Hebrewspeaking population amongst whom we live our friends, our neighbors, the people we meet at the super-market or the health clinic and let them know that there is a warm and friendly, egalitarian and above all non-judgmental alternative to their local synagogue. We thank all those members whose leadership and participation in the Morning Minyan, Friday and Shabbat services, and special Holiday services, continues the wonderful tradition of over four-and-a-half decades of Kehillat Bet Israel. Our thanks to the ladies of BICA and the dedicated team of Russian-speaking ladies who prepare and clean up after Kiddush. And now we also have a special Events Committee that is adding even more variety to the activities, so, come and enjoy all that Bet Israel has to offer! 4 B.I.C.A. Dear friends, As Shavuot, the time of the Giving of the Torah to Israel approaches, we look both back and forwards in time. We can feel good about what we have accomplished already this year, and anticipate the attainment of goals for the future. Recently we met with representatives of the organization Kashouvot, to try to find ways to ameliorate problems for us, both as individuals and as a community. The losses we have sustained seemed to be hitting us suddenly and have been almost overwhelming. We need to find ways to give us all a measure of comfort and also to provide the practical information that will help us to cope. The Caring Committee is working on this (see below) and will keep you all in the loop. Freda Sacharen, bless her, is keeping her Shoppe open every Monday morning, from 9am till midday, and keeps bringing in regular income for the synagogue from her sales of those donated household pieces that, with her tasteful arrangements, turn into must-have items. Kol Hakavod, Freda --- keep up the wonderful work!! I look forward to seeing many of you at our traditional Shavuot Luncheon after the Morning Services. Keep well, keep cool, and Chag Shavuot Sameach, Edith Garfinkle After our interesting and informative workshop with the representative s of Kashouvot that dealt with issues relating to aging, we decided to set up a telephone buddy system. Please let the office know if you would like to receive a brief, friendly phone-call each morning. Alternatively, let us know if you would like to be a caller who will phone two or three people each morning to make sure that they are OK. We feel that this is a service that our synagogue will happily offer in order to provide more security, especially to our single members living alone.
